The SAFED Programme

The training is taken with an highly experienced Department for Transport Registered SAFED Instructor.

The SAFED course is designed to improve the safe and fuel efficient driving techniques of Heavy Goods Vehicle and PCV drivers, it consists of a full day off the job training course, which includes practical assessments, and theory based papers concerning accident prevention and reduction and fuel efficient driving.

The SAFED driver training course consists of one full day of off-the-job training and will be on a candidate: instructor ratio of 1:1 or 2:1.

SAFED instructors will use the guidance contained within the Assessment Guide when assessing candidates during the practical driving sessions. These assessments will be recorded on the marking sheets.

The grading system combines the scores from the practical driving assessments with those achieved in the safety check and theory test exercises.

Minimum standards of competence must be achieved to pass the safety check and theory test exercises.

In the practical driving assessments, the fewer the faults throughout the day, the higher a candidate’s grade will be.

Objective of SAFED:

To promote best practice in safe and fuel efficient driving, leading to:

  • Reduced vehicle accident and incidents
  • Reduced vehicle running costs
  • Improved driving standards
  • Improved road safety
  • Quality of life for the driver

All of the above with just one days SAFED training,  training up to two drivers per day.

Some fuel facts:

  • For every 1000 liters of diesel used, 2.6 tonnes of CO2 is produced
  • 27 million tonnes of CO2 is produced each year in the UK by vehicles
  • 5% saving in fuel on average would give a cost saving of around £1200 plus per driver per year.
  • We normally achieve around 10% plus.
